Resource Description: |
A team of compassionate, specially trained caregivers,
assist, support, and comfort the dying patient and their
family. This is a comprehensive program of care provided by
physicians, nurses, counselors and other professionals
designed to keep the patient comfortable and alert at home,
while emotional support and actual physical assistance is
given to all family members. An Interdisciplinary Team
approach is used to provide hospice care. This means the
team is made up of the patient, a primary caregiver (usually
a family member or friend of the patient), the patient's
primary physician, the hospice medical director (Dr.
Grieshop), a nurse, social worker, chaplain and volunteer.
Other potential members of this team include a personal care
aide, homemaker, and physical, occupational or speech
therapist. All treatment measures are designed to promote
comfort. The goal of hospice is to respectfully permit the
patient to remain fully alert and functioning within the
family network at home while experiencing little or no
symptoms of the disease. Some call this "quality of life".
VNA HOSPICE calls this the right to live fully every moment
of life. |
|
Open Hours: |
Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. A nurse is available on-call 24 hours per day, 7 days

7 days per week, 24 hours per day as necessary to meet
patient and family needs. |
|
Population Served: |
All persons meeting eligibility guidelines for hospice care
can be served by VNA HOSPICE. Primarily, they must have a
medical diagnosis with a prognosis of six months or less
life expectancy if the disease process continues along its
current course. No further chemotherapy, radiation, surgery
or other curative treatment options are expected to effect a
cure and therefore these treatments have been stopped. The
patient must choose to receive hospice care. He/she may
change his/her mind at any time. |

YES |
|
Volunteer Description: |
Volunteers are the hospice heart and soul. Without them,
there could be no hospice. Volunteers receive an in-depth
16-hour training in ways to use the skills they have learned
over a lifetime. With the full support of the whole hospice
team, they give their time, their talents, and their love.
Each patient is offered the services of at least one
volunteer. Volunteers have a choice in the areas they wish
to serve ~ direct patient contacts, office support or
charity fund raising. Volunteer training is provided free of
charge to any interested person. |
|
Certificates/Licenses: |
VNA is a private, not-for-profit hospice licensed by the
state of Missouri, certified by Medicare and Medicaid. VNA
ws established in 1973 and the hospice program was
Medicare/Medicaid certified in 1993. |
|
Funding Sources: |
Medicare, Medicaid, Private Insurance, Private Purchase and
Charitable Contributions purchase hospice services for VNA
patients. Volunteers solicit contributions to support
patients without an adequate source of insurance during the
annual "Spring for Life". |
|
Additional Notes: |
The hospice care is provided in the patient's home which is
defined as "any place the patient resides". This means
"home" may be the place the patient has lived all of their
life, the home of a friend or family member, a nursing or
retirement home, or an apartment. A 1992 Gallup Poll
commissioned by the National Hospice Organization revealed
that 9 of 10 Americans prefer to be cared for and die in
their own home or a family member's home. Women were more
likely to express very high interest in comprehensive
services. Respondents in the South, retirees, college
graduates and higher income people were most likely to
consider hospice services. Many people remain unfamiliar
with what "hospice" means. Speakers are available to provide
informational programs for interested groups. |
